Frank A. Mavrich

Frank Alan “Pigrat” Mavrich, 59, of Canonsburg, died unexpectedly Wednesday, October 18, 2018, in Canonsburg Hospital.

He was born November 10, 1957, a son of the late Anthony “Titch” and Mary “Mitzi” Mavrich.

He was a 1975 graduate of Canon-McMillan High School and a 2012 graduate of Point Park College.

He was a life-long member of SNPJ Lodge 138 in Strabane, and bowled in the men’s Sunday League from age 18 until it ended a few years ago. He was also an original member of the lodge’s Merchant’s Bowling League.

Pigrat, as many knew him, bowled for a number of years in the Washington County Men’s Travel League as well as countless SNPJ-sponsored bowling tournaments, both in Strabane and around the country. He bowled his first 300 game at Princess Lanes in Castle Shannon in 1993, and his second at SNPJ Lodge 138 in 2006.

For more than 10 years, he was a Tournament Director for Lodge 138’s In-House Bowling Tournament and several other bowling tournaments hosted by the lodge.

He spent 20 years on the SNPJ Lodge 138 House Committee and was a long-time member of the Men’s 200 Club, which he emceed for more than 20 years. In fact, many have commented that the 200 Club will never be the same.

Frank formed and organized the Lou Progar Memorial Scholarship Fund and the bowling tournament that went along with it.

He had been a member of the KSKJ St. Jerome Lodge 153 since 1971.

An accomplished musician, he played guitar and drums. In the 1970s, he began playing in Silver Sky with the late George Suhon, the late Michael Bishop and John Harding. He was also known to whip out a banjo, harmonica, kazoo or even the ukulele while with friends for an impromptu jam session.

He and his wife, Amy Dee Maund, got married on October 27, 1979. They travelled every year for their wedding anniversary to Daytona Beach, Fla., where they also honeymooned. During the summer months, they spent their weekends at the SNPJ Recreation Center in Enon Valley, Pa. During the days at the campsite, Frank could be found in his seat – seriously, he claimed it – at the Tiki Bar.

He just returned to his old company, Heyl & Patterson Equipment Division of the HALL Group, as electrical engineering manager. They felt that he had “come back home” and were thrilled to have him back on board, even for the short time that he had been working there. Throughout his career, he travelled all of the country and the world, including Greece, South Africa, and Columbia, and he even got to visit Slovenia and Croatia, where his family was from.

And in the middle of all of that, he once scored a hole in one at Rolling Green Golf Course in Eighty Four. 

Also surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Katie (James) Green and Emily (Rich) Arrigoni; one grandson, James Eli Green (who called him Pappy); a brother, Dennis (Ellen) Mavrich and two nieces, Catherine and Angela Mavrich. Also surviving are two aunts, Mildred “Mickey” Chesnic, Jennie (Walter) Sibert; an uncle, John Skariot, and countless cousins.

Friends are welcome from 2~7 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, 2017 in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120 where services will be held at 10 AM on Monday, October 23, 2017. Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg.
