Richard D. "Dick" Stockman

October 21, 1927 — November 7, 2015

Richard Dale Stockman, 88, died Saturday, November 7, 2015 at his home in North Strabane.

He was born October 21, 1927 in Lisbon, Ohio the son of Carl and Nellie Rigdon Stockman.

He graduated from David Anderson High School in 1945 and served in the US Army during the occupation of Japan. Returning home, he began his printing career at the Lisbon Evening Journal as a linotype operator. In 1956, Richard purchased Hawkland Bowling Alleys in Lisbon and owned it until 1964. He was inducted into the Salem Ohio Bowling Hall of Fame the inaugural year of the association for his bowling ability. He was a distinguished member of the Youngstown Vindicator traveling team that competed throughout the Tri-state area and he bowled in many national tournaments.

In 1964, Richard moved to Washington, PA as a linotype operator for Case Programs, on-grounds printer of The Meadows harness and simulcast racing programs. He became owner in 1968 and never missed the printing of any race card deadline. He retired February 1, 2000.

Richard was a member of Chartiers-Hill United Presbyterian Church and a 50-year member of the Lisbon Lodge F. & A. M. He was a long serving member of the Columbiana County Fair Board.  He was also a bowler in several leagues in the Washington area until retirement and enjoyed golfing, horse racing and attending auctions or as he would call it “dickering”.

On August 29, 1966, he married Meretta Ikirt in their home church, Lisbon First Christian. Together, they owned and operated Stockman Printing in Houston, PA where they overcame flood and fire in 1990 and chose to rebuild the same year. They both retired in 2000.

In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by son Matthew R. Stockman, wife Tania and granddaughter Illiana of Palm Coast, FL and son David C. Stockman, wife Leah and grandson Nathan of Canonsburg, PA; a brother, Jack J. Stockman and wife Esther of Pompano Beach, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased, along with his parents, are his sisters Melvena Reese and Nedra Smith.

Friends are welcome from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Wednesday, November 11, 2015 in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra owner/supervisor, Lin Webb funeral director, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg 724-745-8120 with a memorial service at 7:30 PM where a funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM Thursday, November 12, 2015 with Rev. Donald Austin of Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church, officiating.   Interment will follow at 11:00 AM in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Twp. with full military honors rendered by the VFW Post 191 Honor Guard.
